Nadia and Carol

Nadia Comaneci is a Romanian gymnast (born 12 November 1961, in Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej (now Onesti] Romania). She was first to achieve a perfect 10 during an Olympic occasion. Bela Karrolyi was the Romanian gymnastics trainer who would become Comaneci's coach in later years, discovered her at age six. At first, she competed in the junior national championships of Romania in the year 1969, she finished 13th. Then in the year 1970, she the Romanian gymnast won. In her first international competition in 1972 a pre-Olympic junior competition for communist-bloc nations she took home three gold medals and in 1973 and 1974, she was an overall junior champion. At her first competition as a senior, in 1975 she beat out Russian Lyudmila Turishcheva the five-time European champion winning four gold medals as well as one silver. She was the first woman to do a reverse double salo on the bar with a parallel surface in the event she won American Cup, New York City 1976.
